"Got The Power BoomBox" Hoodie (Zalama Edition)

This heavy blend hooded sweatshirt is a collaboration with Zalama Crew, a Hip Hop crew from Cali Colombia that creates music, performance, dance, community programs and educational programming about Afro Descendant music and culture in Latin America and specifically communities on Colombia's Pacific coast. They conduct these perfromances, programs and tour musically, world wide. As friends and colleagues of artist Bayeté Ross Smith, Zalama has been a collaborator for several years on performances and photographic and video documentation of Colombian Hip Hop and Afro Descendant culture and history in Colombia.

This collaborative hoodie commemorates Bayeté Ross Smith's sculpture series Got The Power: Boomboxes most recent installations in France and at The Apollo Theater in Harlem NY. Now in its 14 year, these sculptures have been created at 15 sites, in 12 cities, in four countries, on 3 continents. Harlem NY, Brooklyn NY, Paris France, Saint-Denis France, Montogmery AL, Addis Ababa Ethiopia, Kyiv Ukraine, the Twin Cities Minnesota, Hartford CT, Detroit MI, Baltimore MD, Birmingham AL, and Atlanta GA. The most recent sculptures in this series combine vintage boomboxes with sugarcane and cotton boombox replicas, tobacco, cotton, and sugar. These materials reference colonial economics, the extraction of wealth and resources from certain regions of the world, and the current wealth gap between nations and communities. The sugarcane and cotton boombox replicas were made in collaboration with Pulp Works Inc. and reference sustainable packaging and its role in addressing the climate crisis.

Made with a thick blend of cotton and polyester, it feels plush, soft and warm, a perfect choice for any cold day. In the front, the spacious kangaroo pocket adds daily practicality while the hood's drawstring is the same color as the base sweater for extra style points.
